Guinea's mineral resources : Heavy sands (ilmenite, rutile, zircon)

zircon

Total reserves assessed at 131.4 thousand tons, including 35.1 explored tons. Heavy sands can be traced in sandy blankets of the sea terraces and sand bars along the Atlantic coast. They are best explored on Cape Verga (the Verga deposit), where in 1969-1970 Soviet geologists conducted most serious research. Black sands in forms of interlayers and lenses were noticed among quartz sands of the first sea terrace and among beach sands (re-deposited terrace sands) and lateritic residua to the east of Cape Verga. Total ore mineral reserves are approximated to reach 52.5 thousand tons with average ore mineral content of 34.2 kilograms/meter. Explored reserves make up 35.1 thousand tons. Heavy sands occur all along the Atlantic coast in Dangara, Moteba, Benti, Dyubreka, Boke regions and on the islands Kaban, Tanan, Kanibombo, Marara, Roum, Tamara and others. Overall stretch of sand formations containing heavy sands make up around 186 kilometers. These sands are worth of further study.
